WELCOME

The Waimea Tramping Club started in 1973 as a part of the Richmond YMCA. It became a separate incorporated  club in 1975 and was affiliated with the "Federated Mountain Clubs of NZ Inc" in 1979.

We are based in the Tasman/Nelson area and regularly tramp in the Abel Tasman National Park,  the Kahurangi National Park, the Mt Richmond Forest Park, the Nelson Lakes National Park, the Marlborough Sounds Maritime  Park, the Victoria Forest Park and other conservation areas, all within a 100km of Nelson.  We also range through the Rainbow Valley, Inland and Seaward Kaikouras, the Paparoas, Lewis Pass area, Lake Sumner Forest Park, Hanmer Forest Park and Arthurs Pass National Park.  On occasions we head further south and even pop overseas to the outlying North Island.

Membership is presently about 100.  We organise tramps for each weekend, usually alternating a day walk on Sunday with an overnight trip the next weekend.  We cater for all grades of tramps, especially on long weekends, and include mountain bike trips and socials in our activities.

Online Bookings for South Island Great Walks- (follow this link for details)

You now have to buy hut or camping passes all year round for all the Great Walks but in season bookings for the main South Island Great Walks are now on-line!!! Go to the Doc web site and you can check the availability of  bunks or tent sites and book them.  For the Abel Tasman and Heaphy Great Walks the season is from October 1st to 30th June; $25 per night for a hut on the Abel Tasman and $20 per night for the Heaphy (BIG increase). For the Routeburn, Kepler and Milford the season is from October 25th to 26th April and the huts cost $40 per night. Cheaper for tents (where you can tent) and young people of course. Booking online is by credit card.  There is a 10% discount if you quote both FMC Card No. and your Annual Pass No. but this has to be done either at the Doc Visitor Centre or by phoning their new Booking Help Desk (03) 546 8210.  You can also still book by phone, fax or letter and pay by cash or cheque but you have download and complete a booking form and post it to the local visitor centre or contact them direct.  Doc will be withdrawing ticketing from their previous agencies.
